Street art sculpture: History and pioneers

Street art sculpture is an evolution of urban street art. Street art was initially dominated by street painting, large-scale murals and graffiti. Although street art is often associated with monumental frescoes and collages, some artists have explored the third dimension to appropriate public space in an even more immersive way.

The history of street art sculpture has its roots in the 1980s, when artists began to hijack everyday objects and transform them into urban works of art. Among the pioneers, Invader is famous for his video-game-inspired mosaics, integrated into streets around the world. Banksy, with his provocative sculptures such as his modified red London telephone, has also left his mark on this movement. Mark Jenkins, meanwhile, uses hyperrealistic mannequins placed in urban spaces to provoke reactions.

Today, street art sculpture continues to evolve, with artists like Seth Globepainter playing with the environment to create interactive works. This movement is a veritable revolution in urban art, transforming public spaces into open-air galleries and offering a new perspective on street art.

Characteristics of a street art sculpture

Street art sculpture is distinguished by several elements that reflect its anchorage in urban space. It redefines public space, transforming it into an open-air gallery.

  • Use of public space: street art sculptures are often integrated into the street, on facades and sidewalks.
  • Varied materials: We use a variety of materials, including concrete, metal, wood, resin and recycled objects.
  • Interactivity with the environment: Fusion with architecture or the urban landscape. Many street art sculptures are inseparable from the environment in which they were created.
  • Committed message: These works often contain social, political or cultural criticism.
  • Appropriating the everyday: street art sculpture often involves transforming urban elements into artistic sculptures.
  • Surprise effect: the works are often placed in unexpected places to capture the attention of passers-by.
  • Ephemerality: Some installations are temporary, subject to the vagaries of time and human intervention.

Corporate art leasing enables progressive acquisition, offering budgetary flexibility. Thanks to art leasing, professionals can integrate art into their spaces without tying up capital.
