What is a street art artist?
By definition, a street artist is one who creates works of art in public space, using it as a place for artistic expression.
Street artists create their works directly on walls, buildings or other urban surfaces, transforming streets into veritable open-air galleries. The art of the street artist is integrated into the everyday landscape of passers-by, offering a free and often committed form of artistic expression that breaks with the conventions of traditional galleries. Street artists appropriate public space through creations that challenge, decorate or denounce.
Street art can be permanent or ephemeral, figurative or abstract.
Where to find street art?
The works of street art artists can be found on a multitude of supports in the public space. Whether on the walls of buildings, street furniture such as benches or lampposts, bus shelters, road signs, store iron curtains, industrial wastelands or abandoned buildings, road bridges - every surface becomes a potential canvas for the street art artist. Train and metro carriages, as well as the stations themselves, also serve as playgrounds for the street art artist. He transforms places often perceived as banal, sad and dull into veritable open-air art galleries.
The street artist's works breathe new life into these everyday spaces, inviting passers-by to reflect, marvel or even interact with art in the middle of the city. Many agree that street art brings color and life to bleak urban environments.
Some street art artists have made a name for themselves thanks to their work on special supports, such as C215 on La Poste letterboxes, or Nasty in Paris metro stations...
Street art artists: what are their styles?
There's no one particular style for street art artists. In fact, street art is an artistic movement that encompasses an infinite number of styles. There are figurative, abstract, realist, minimalist, hyper-realist, cubist etc. street art artists. Some create sculptures or installations in the streets.
What techniques are used by street artists?
Street art is an artistic movement that brings together a multitude of different techniques and media. Certain "fast" techniques are favored by street art artists, such as stenciling, collage of works on paper and posters, spray painting, painting with a roller or brush, mosaic collage, etc. Street art artists can also adapt their technique to the characteristics of the chosen support and its environment.
The street artist: free and committed
Street artists can convey messages through their works, which are intended to challenge, criticize, denounce and draw public attention to causes close to their hearts. Street artists often enjoy a great deal of freedom of expression, with messages ranging from the strong and provocative to the lighter, more positive and, in some cases, humorous.
Some street artists use walls in symbolic locations to reinforce the message of their work. One example is Banksy, a street artist who has created a series of works on the wall separating Palestine from Israel.
The street art artist, works of all sizes
We often think of monumental works by street art artists, and rightly so. Some murals cover entire building facades. Some street art artists also create works on the ground, such as Golif, the rising star of Austrian street art, who created a monumental 28,000 m2 fresco on the floor of a parking lot in the suburbs of Vienna. The fresco is so large that it can even be seen on the Google map!
"A contrario", some street art artists prefer to work on a human scale, like C215, who created a series of stenciled portraits of homeless people on the walls of Paris. These human-scale portraits enable the street artist to give his subjects a place in society, and draw public attention to a reality that tends to be ignored.
The street art artist in gallery
Like contemporary artists, street artists can be exhibited in art galleries, and a number of them are. In addition to their work on the street, street artists often work in their studios, creating works on canvas or other media (paper, wood, metal plates, road signs, various objects, etc.). This work is then exhibited in galleries, where it is referred to as "post graffiti".
