History of contemporary sculpture

Contemporary sculpture was born at the beginning of the 20th century. It was at this time that artistic movements emerged that challenged academic conventions.

Influenced by the cubism of Picasso and Braque, the surrealism of Dalí and Russian constructivism, classical sculpture gradually freed itself from traditional constraints to explore new forms of expression.

After the Second World War, artists such as Henry Moore and Alexander Calder revolutionized sculpture by integrating abstract and mobile elements. Later, figures such as Louise Bourgeois, Anish Kapoor and Richard Serra pushed the boundaries of sculpture even further, working with monumental scales and innovative materials.

Today, contemporary sculpture continues to evolve, incorporating new materials such as glass, polymers, concrete and even digital technologies.

Characteristics of contemporary sculpture

Contemporary sculpture is distinguished by several fundamental elements:

  • Exploring materials: Contemporary artists use a wide variety of materials such as bronze, glass, metal, resin, wood, concrete...
  • Playing with shapes and volumes: contemporary sculptures explore forms that are often abstract or unstructured, pushing back the boundaries of realism.
  • Experimenting with space: The relationship between the work and its environment is essential. Some contemporary sculptures are interactive, monumental or integrated into immersive installations.
  • Symbolism and narrative: unlike classical sculpture, which focuses on representation, contemporary sculpture seeks to convey emotions or a notion of aesthetics.

Investing in contemporary sculpture for professionals and businesses

Acquiring a contemporary sculpture represents much more than a simple artistic purchase: it's a genuine cultural and financial investment. Whether it's to embellish a lobby, a coworking space or an executive office, investing incontemporary art is both an aesthetic and a strategic move.

For companies and professionalsThere are a number of options for integrating art into their spaces, while benefiting from tax advantages.

Corporate art leasing is a solution enabling companies to acquire works of art via a rental system with an option to purchase. This preserves the company's cash flow while enhancing the value of its workspace. Companies and professionals can also benefit from works of art tax exemption. In France, the purchase of an original work of art qualifies for a tax deduction under certain conditions, such as public exhibition. Exhibiting a work of art on the company's premises enhances its brand image. A company that invests in contemporary art demonstrates its commitment to culture and innovation, reinforcing its attractiveness. It also diversifies the company's assets. As contemporary art is a booming market, owning a contemporary sculpture by a recognized artist can be an attractive long-term investment.
