What is geometric painting?

Geometric painting is a very particular style of painting. It grew out of an artistic movement that emphasizes mathematical forms and the precision of lines. It is characterized by the use of squares, circles, triangles and other shapes. These shapes are organized in a structured way to create balanced compositions.

This style is based on a quest for harmony and visual order, where every element is meticulously calculated.

Geometric painting can be abstract or figurative, depending on the artist's intention. Some creators play with volumes and perspective, while others rely on the repetitive use of motifs to provoke a unique visual reaction bordering on the hypnotic.

Recognizing geometric painting

A work of geometric painting can be recognized by several distinct, highly recognizable criteria.

Use of precise shapes: in a geometric painting we find shapes such as triangles, squares, circles and other geometric figures as the main components of the work.
Reflected color palette: often contrasting or monochromatic, geometric painting emphasizes the visual structure of the work.
Absence of traditional perspective: depth is often suggested by the arrangement of forms rather than by the use of classical techniques.
Repetitive organization: some artists play on the repetition of motifs and geometric shapes to create a hypnotic effect.
Influence of mathematics and science: many geometric artists draw on mathematical principles to structure their compositions.

A little history of geometric painting

Geometric painting has its roots in the early 20th century. It was influenced by the cubism of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who began to deconstruct realistic representation into geometric fragments.

The movement took off with Russian Constructivism and Kazimir Malevich's Suprematism, notably with his famous Black Square on a White Background. The Bauhaus, an art and design school founded by Walter Gropius, also played a key role, promoting a rational, functional approach to art.

In the 1960s, Minimalism and Op Art took up these principles to explore visual effects and the interaction between the work and the viewer.

Today, geometric painting continues to evolve with the integration of new technologies and artificial intelligence into the creative process.
