What is cubist painting?

Stemming from a revolutionary artistic movement in the early XXᵉ century, cubist painting created a tidal wave within the artist community. It was essentially driven by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.

Characterized by the deconstruction of forms and the use of multiple perspectives, cubist painting overturns traditional codes of representation. Through geometric compositions and the interplay of light and shadow, it proposes a new reading of the world. Objects and figures are fragmented into forms, a departure from the classical figurative art much more widespread at the time.

Unlike classical figurative painting, which seeks to reproduce reality with perspective and depth, cubist painting deconstructs objects and faces into geometric shapes. Its distinctive feature is that it gives rise to graphic, abstract compositions. Far from classical aesthetics, cubist painting uses lines, colors and volumes to create a simultaneous, decomposed vision of the world.

This style has influenced many artists and continues to be explored today. Cubist painting paved the way for modern art, freeing painting from the constraints of realism. It marked the birth of bold and surprising new visual approaches.

How do you identify a cubist painting?

Cubist painting is characterized by unique features that break with the traditional artistic conventions of the time.

Deconstruction of forms: objects, faces and landscapes are fragmented into multiple shapes. It is then possible to identify the subject of cubist painting, but the representation is more of the unreal and abstract.
Multiplication of viewpoints: the same subject can be represented from different angles simultaneously.
Use of geometric shapes: triangles, rectangles, spheres and curves replace realistic lines.
Color palette: in analytical cubism, hues are sober (brown, gray, ochre), whereas synthetic cubism favors brighter colors.
Absence of classical perspective: proportions are altered, making the works even more abstract.

How did the cubist movement emerge?

Influenced by African art and research into perspective, Cubism was divided into two phases: Analytical Cubism, characterized by sober tones and exploded forms, and Synthetic Cubism, which introduced bright colors and collages.

This movement has had a profound impact on the history of art, influencing many contemporary artists.
