Pop art sculpture is an extension of the pop art movement, which emerged in the 1950s. This movement was inspired by popular culture, advertising and media icons. Unlike the pictorial works of Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol, pop art sculpture transposes these elements into a three-dimensional universe, offering a strong and often monumental physical presence.
Pop artists turn everyday objects into colorful, playful works of art. Pop art sculptures use a variety of materials, including resin, plastic, stainless steel and neon. They include sculptures of iconic figures from popular culture, comic strip characters and consumer products transformed into works of art.
One of the best-known artists in pop art sculpture is Jeff Koons, famous for his shiny, inflatable sculptures such as his iconic Balloon Dog. Other creators also explore this style, incorporating digital and contemporary influences.
Today, pop art sculpture continues to influence contemporary art, adding a touch of eccentricity, humor and modernity. Its aim is to bridge the gap between art and consumer society.
Pop art sculpture is distinguished by several characteristics of the pop art movement:
