What is street art?

Street art is a form of urban artistic expression that originated in the 60s and 70s, mainly in New York. Originally, its aim was to create works on public spaces such as walls, facades, sidewalks or abandoned structures. Far from being designed simply to decorate the streets, it is often the bearer of politically, socially or culturally engaged messages.

This type of art is distinguished by its wide variety of techniques: spray cans, stencils, collages, murals, posters and mosaics.

This facilitates access to art, even for people who would not normally have access to it. Indeed, the setting and location of the exhibition is outside traditional institutions, visible in the street. In this way, street art has become popular with the general public, who are not necessarily sensitive to art.

Street art is a living, evolving art form. It is inspired by various currents such as pop artand surrealism. Famous artists such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey and JR have contributed to its worldwide recognition, transforming cities into veritable open-air galleries.

How did the street art movement emerge?

Street art was born in the 60s and 70s, in a context of social revolt and the need for free expression.

Street art has its origins in New York. The movement took root in the New York subway, with graffiti and tagging as forms of urban protest. Theinfluence of hip-hop, in full swing at the time, propelled street art painting into the underground artistic sphere. Behind the artistic side also lay political expression. Artists proposing committed messages appeared on walls to denounce social and political injustices.

The artists employ a variety of techniques, using stencils, collages, murals and aerosols for spontaneous creations.

Street art then spread throughout the world, becoming a symbol of freedom of expression and creativity. Today, it's an essential artistic trend, combining provocation, aestheticism and social reflection.

How to recognize a work of street art?

Street art painting is distinguished by unique characteristics that reflect its urban origins and committed scope.

Urban support: created on walls, facades, sidewalks or unexpected public spaces. Now, street art painting can also be found in art galleries, exhibited on canvas.
Varied techniques: using spray cans, stencils, collages, posters or monumental murals.
Committed messages: these works often carry social, political or cultural criticism.
Bold style: vivid colors, sharp contrasts and striking compositions immediately attract attention. Bright colors are generally used.
Presence of figurative and symbolic elements: faces, pop culture icons, diverted slogans or symbols.
Signature or tag: the artist often leaves a distinctive mark, be it a pseudonym, logo or recurring motif.

Styles that influence street art

Street art draws its inspiration from numerous artistic trends, enriching its diversity and creativity. These include graffiti. Graffiti is the very origin of street art, with its stylized lettering and emblematic tags. Pop art is also a source of inspiration for the street art movement. It features the use of bright colors and popular culture icons, influenced by artists such as Andy Warhol. Cubism, known for its use of unstructured geometric shapes and bold perspectives, has been a major inspiration for street art. Collage and billposting are also part of street art practice. That's why some works are composed of superimposed images, text and materials for a strong visual effect.

Street art is a constantly evolving hybrid art form, fusing these influences to create unique works of art.
