Galerie Le Container : Concept

Located in the south of France, in Aix-en-Provence, La Galerie Le Container is a street art and contemporary gallery. It is a genuine space for artistic expression, dedicated to contemporary art in all its forms.
It showcases artists and local artists, exploring a variety of currents, from theabstract to pop artthrough to street art and minimalist painting.

The gallery offers an immersive approach, allowing visitors to discover singular works of art.

Founded in 2016 by Déborah Bosseaux and Clément Dorance, Galerie Le Container began by transforming shipping containers into traveling exhibition spaces. The project traveled to various cities to promote street art.

In 2019, it established itself on a permanent basis, first in Nice, then in the heart of the historic center of Aix-en-Provence, on rue Granet. Today, the gallery presents some twenty artists from the urban and contemporary movements, combining major international names and emerging talents. The gallery is committed to promoting all art forms (photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, objet d'art...).

What is minimalist painting?

Minimalist painting is an artistic movement based on the search for the essential. It is characterized by an extreme reduction of form and color to create a powerful visual impact. Unlike figurative painting, which faithfully represents the world, minimalist painting strips the image of all superfluity, retaining only the essential structure.

Born in the 1960s, this radical approach emphasizes the balance, harmony and strength of pure compositions. The aim is to offer an aesthetic experience stripped of artifice, where light, texture and space play a central role.

Minimalist painting invites contemplation, leaving the viewer free to interpret the work without narrative or symbolic distraction. In recent years, it has been widely promoted by the minimalist movements in interior design.

Characteristics of a minimalist painting

Minimalist painting has several distinguishing features.

The emphasis is on simplicity. The emphasis is on pure geometric shapes such as squares, circles and straight or curved lines. There are also single-color and abstract works.

Minimalist artists generally use a restricted palette. Colors are often monochromatic or reduced to neutral tones. Occasionally, a cameo of the same color is used. In many minimalist paintings, there is a marked absence of texture. Surfaces are often smooth and devoid of excessive relief. The composition of minimalist paintings is rigorous. The pictorial space is organized precisely, with a concern for balance. This type of uncluttered painting has an immediate visual impact. The aim is to provoke a strong reaction by drawing the eye to a particular point in the painting, or to blend it into the background.

The rise of the Minimalist movement and the place of Minimalist painting in art history

Minimalist painting is part of a broader movement (Minimalism) that began in the United States in the 1960s. It was born in reaction to Abstract Expressionism, judged to be too emotional and gestural. Artists such as Frank Stella, Donald Judd and Ellsworth Kelly advocated an approach reduced to the essential.

Inspired by constructivism, this movement is interested in the notions of pure form and mathematical precision. It is distinguished by its absence of narrative and its refusal of all artifice. Over the decades, Minimalism has influenced Minimalist painting, architecture, design and even fashion, becoming a universal language of aestheticism.

Today, minimalist painting remains a major reference in contemporary art, and continues to inspire creators in search of purity and visual radicalism.
