Contemporary painting emerged after the Second World War. It marks a clean break with more traditional painting trends. Far from conforming to academic rules, it sought to redefine art by exploring new techniques, new media and new approaches.
The 1950s-1960s saw the rise of Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Artists such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko pushed back the boundaries of painting, focusing on visual impact, emotional expression and simplification of form.
Since then, contemporary painting has continued to evolve. It incorporates a variety of influences, including street art, photography and digital art. Today, it reflects current issues - be they political, social or aesthetic - and continues to offer infinite creative freedom.
A contemporary painting is distinguished by several key characteristics:
● Freedom of expression: artists use different media, techniques and styles to express their vision. This includes artworks of contemporary painting on canvas, and particularly on large-scale free-form canvas.
● Mixing techniques: painting can be combined with collage, digital, or novel materials from recycling, for example.
● Thematic exploration: she tackles a variety of themes, from the political to the abstract. It encourages us to question, feel or observe.
● Visual innovation: deconstructed forms, bright or minimalist colors, and play on textures.
Galerie Le Container exhibits contemporary paintings that embody these aspects.
Several artists have helped shape contemporary painting, each bringing a unique and singular vision to the movement. Jean-Michel Basquiat, an American painter, created paintings that were a cross between street art and abstract painting, giving a voice to urban energy. The painter Banksy, an emblematic figure of street art and contemporary painting, combines provocation and political commitment. He creates large-scale frescoes in a variety of media (stencils, paint, etc.). Gerhard Richter is the undisputed master of experimentation. He has always oscillated between hyper-realism and abstract painting. This trend in contemporary painting was recognized by Richter as early as the 1980s. Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist renowned for her immersive, colorful works. She has experimented with various art forms (painting, sculpture and writing). Her contemporary works are strong and colorful.
Galerie Le Container works with artists who are part of this movement, and whose creations stand out for their strength and singularity.
Contemporary painting comes in many styles, each bringing a unique vision of modern art. Among the paintings presented by Galerie Le Container are :
● Surrealist painting : Intriguing, dreamlike works inspired by the unconscious. Among the best-known artists is Salvator Dali.
● Pop art : This type of painting is characterized by bright colors and images taken from popular culture (celebrities, comics...).
● Street art paintings : a committed, urban artistic expression that has invited art into the streets.
● Cubist painting : This type of painting fragments the work into various forms. It proposes a new vision of reality.
● Abstract painting : It aims to freely explore the use of colors and shapes.
● Figurative painting : In the contemporary trend we also find paintings that are more representative but also modern of reality.
● Geometric painting : This style uses regular structures and calculated compositions.
● Minimalist painting This style uses regular structures and calculated compositions.
