Born in 1975
Hugo Pondz lives and works in Belgium. The son of an artist and an antique dealer, it wasn't until the age of 28 that painting became an obvious choice for him.
No matter how big or small Hugo's canvas is, it draws us into its immensity.
The blue variations hypnotize us, the minimalist architecture makes us dizzy. At the center, always a figure. He likes to take his characters from canvas to canvas, letting them appear in spaces where calm and emptiness reign. His half-realistic, half-realist landscapes open onto an infinite horizon. Time seems suspended.
Picking up on the legacy of De Chirico and the Surrealist movement, Hugo restored a poetic and philosophical dimension to painting. His art transcends mere aestheticism. He questions our existence, our place in a societal world constructed and deconstructed. He plunges us into an in-between world, but which? dream and reality, conscious and unconscious, or purgatory?
