Softness is perhaps the first impression one gets when looking at Emmanuelle's paintings. Everything seems to float in a fine mist of calm and serenity. You can make out shapes, paths, architecture, nature...
Technically, Emmanuelle plays with pictorial effects. Flat tints, washes, sharp or blurred lines, projections... Shapes interact with each other. Colors express themselves alone or blend together, and one of them often becomes the red thread of the composition.
Emmanuelle's work focuses on memory: what it keeps, what it forgets, the little things that can take up a lot of space in our heads, and the big events that eventually lose their top spot. Memory has its own hierarchy, consubstantial with our sensibility. Each artwork becomes a personal narrative, questioning the place given to what we perceive.
"At the heart of my approach is a questioning of memory, seen not only as a living, indispensable archive, but also as a space for transformation and revision. I address notions such as forgetting, denial, complacency and the rewriting of histories, which question our perception and the way we construct our narrative, whether personal or collective. These themes are reflected in my pictorial practice, where layers, erasures and juxtapositions become metaphors for the mechanisms of memory and forgetting."
Her paintings take us to the edge of dreams, where our memories blend and transform to create an unreal, poetic dream.
